Here in France, it's all about "la rentrée." So how do you say this in English?
Well...we don't really have la rentrée in the UK. We just go back to school or go back to work. Mind you, we don't really have holidays like in France - shops and businesses don't shut in August, the school holidays are only 5 weeks long and people usually go on holiday for a maximum of 2 weeks. And if you're in America...well, you can definitely forget about 3 weeks lying on a beach!
Here are a few useful phrases to help you talk about "la rentrée":
Did you have a good summer?
Did you go away?
How was the weather?
When did you get back?
I had a (really) great / good / terrible time in ______. I.....
I feel / don't feel _________ to be back at school / work. I....
Don't forget, the formula for successful small talk is this:
Ask a question -> Answer. Add some more information. Ask another question.
Ask -> Answer -> Add. Repeat.
It's simple and you'll keep the conversation going.
As they say in France "Bonne rentrée everyone!"
