I've just spent a wonderful weekend in the Netherlands, where I was amazed at how well everyone speaks English. And by everyone, I mean old and young people alike.
It made me think about how my own students are desperately trying to learn English and how we can help the next generation speak better English. Ok, Dutch is quite a close relative of the English language, but so is German, French, Spanish, Italian...if you are a native speaker of Japanese or Arabic, you are at more of a disadvantage.
That means if you speak a Latin or Germanic language, think of it as an advantage!
