However, French restaurants are now being encouraged to give customers this kind of doggy bag, which has been rebranded as le gourmet bag. (It does sound much more glamourous than a doggy bag.)
Will French customers be asking to take home their leftovers? In my opinion, one reason that Americans are so fond of doggy bags is that restaurants often serve ENORMOUS portions.
In France, someone with a regular appetite can usually finish their meal and doesn't need to take half of it home for later.
My dog will be happy though: now I can take my steak bone home for him. The true definition of a doggy bag.
